Driving down Kaumuali'i highway sits the one and only best place to pick up shaved ice in small town Waimea, Jojo's Shave Ice. The tiny red and yellow house welcomes island locals and visitors to savor Jojo's top 16 in house combinations of ono (delicious) shaved ice or the option to create your own treat from a list of 34 other flavors. Jojo offers two sizes, the Da Kine (28oz) or the Big Kahuna (40oz).
Compared to any other shaved ice confections out there, nothing beats Jojo's robust, fluffy, powdered snow-like texture. What makes Jojo's extra special is the combinations of mouthwatering homemade syrup flavors which are carefully made with cane sugar, tasty homemade cream toppings, and sweet macadamia nut and vanilla ice cream.
I had the chance to try a few of Jojo's combinations and have to say my favorite is the Haupia special. The Haupia special comes in a brown wheat straw bowl and is filled with ice as high as Hawai'i's mountain topped with white colored coconut syrup and homemade Haupia cream and a scoop of macadamia nut ice cream hidden in the middle.
Kalani Keko'i an island local woman who calls herself the shave ice addict, creates her usual combination of her favorite flavors strawberry and pineapple syrups topped with ling hing mui powder that's as red as Kaua'i's dirt. Ling hing mui powder tastes sweet, sour and salty by itself but when added to shave ice it creates a zesty, flavorful treat.
"It's a simple spot that's got a shit ton of flavors and offers local discounts," said Kalani Keko'i. "Their shave ice is huge and worth the price."
If you're a shave ice fanatic and find yourself traveling down the highway in beautiful Waimea, stop by Jojo's for a cool treat and get yourself a Jojo's shave ice t-shirt.
